image Christina Oesterheld did her PhD on three novels by Qurratulain Hyder from Humboldt University, Berlin, in 1986. She currently teaches Urdu in the Department of Modern South Asian Studies (Languages and Literatures) at the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg. Her main research interest is Urdu fiction from the 19th century to the present, including various forms of popular literature. She has translated Urdu short stories and modern poetry into German which have been published in anthologies and literary journals.

Revised version of the paper presented at the Sahitya Akademi, Delhi, in March 2007, and in abridged form at the 20th European Conference on Modern South Asian Studies (ECMSAS) in Manchester in 2008, Panel 18: Writing the social popular literary traditions in South Asia.
